Pierre Moerlen’s version of the band Gong was less hippy space rock and more adventurous jazz fusion with heavy doses of percussion. Classic albums like Gazeuse! and Downwind are always in heavy rotation at WPPP. To further confuse things, after Pierre Moerlen passed away in 2005 a band continued on as Gong Expresso playing songs from the PM:Gong offshoot (An offshoot of an offshoot?). This is killer footage from a jazz festival in France in 2015 of Gong Expresso playing “Downwind” with Pierre’s brother, Benoit, taking his place along with Mireille Bauer (Marimba) François Causse – (Drums) Hansford Rowe (Bass), Julien Sandiford (Guitar) and Chander Sardjoe (Percussion) is an incredible tribute to an awesome group.
